Jobs figures reveal need for online skills

24.01.12
Last week the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released figures that put unemployment at 2.69 million, that’s 8.4% of the fit-to-work population, meaning there is now a higher rate of unemployed people in this country than at any point since 1996.

Over 8 million people in the UK still can’t or don’t regularly use the internet, and so are putting themselves at a disadvantage in their quest to find work, which is why here at UK online centres we’re running the New Year, new online you! campaign.

The campaign, which launched yesterday and runs until 17 February, aims to encourage people to make 2012 the year to get started online. It will encourage people to access government services online, focusing on Jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) online, as well as pensions and health information, to help people make the most of all the services available online.

With 77% of people now having to use computers regularly in their work, and the vast majority of jobs being advertised requiring basic IT skills (92%), being able to use a computer is essential in the work place. But it's just as important when looking for work, with the internet now the preferred place for advertising jobs for up to 80% of employers.

In the three months up to November 2011, 164,000 people were made redundant, an increase of 14,000 on the previous three months, and 5,000 up on the same period in 2010, meaning lots of people are finding themselves unemployed after years in the same job, and without the skills they need to find new work.

The New Year, new online you! campaign is taking place at over 1,000 venues around the UK, where people who are offline can find the help and support they need to get started.
